KINGS OF SWING: SPA CATHOLIC BASEBALL EYES ANOTHER MAGICAL SEASON

The Saratoga Central Catholic baseball team made history last season winning its first state championship.
This year, the Saints are just as focused as they look to win back-to-back Class C state crowns. On Friday, May 8, the Saints (15-3, 13-1 league) won the Wasaren League title with a convincing 12-0 win over Mechanicville at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Saratoga Springs.
Last year was a special season for the Saints and long-time coach Alphonse Lambert, who is in his 38th year leading the varsity. After Spa Catholic defeated Granville, 5-2, on May 29 to win the Section 2 Class C crown — their first since 2011 — the Saints blanked Deposit-Hancock, 4-0, in the Class C state title game on June 14 at SUNY Binghamton Stadium to finally capture that elusive title. Under Lambert’s guidance, the Saints have won six sectional championships, 17 league titles, four regional titles and have compiled 13 20-win seasons.
The Saints were scheduled to play Tamarac on Tuesday, May 12, and Schalmont on Saturday, May 16, before beginning the Section 2 Class C playoffs on Wednesday, May 20. The team consists of seniors Pierce Byrne (who is committed to play baseball at Siena University), Nacy Devincenzo, Martin Elie, Kihl Kelly, Carson Moser (who is committed to play baseball at Duke), Jason Pescetti and Zachary Streicher, juniors Max Britten, Luke Dejnozka, Mark Mahay and Sandy McDonald, sophomores Kingston David and Joey Lindner, freshman Cole Cefalu and eighth-grader Connor Day.
