Elaine and John Angwin, parishioners at St. Leo & St. Ann’s Church in Holland Patent, outside of Utica, paid a visit to their marriage officiant this past weekend: Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger. The couple, who celebrated their 50th anniversary this year, were married by then-Father Scharfenberger on Aug. 12, 1973, at St. Stanislaus Kostka in Maspeth, just a month after he was ordained a priest. It was the first marriage the Bishop officiated after entering the priesthood. The group (shown together in the above photo) caught up at the Albany Diocese’s 51st Annual Marriage Jubilee Celebration on Sept. 23 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. The Angwins were joined by their families who came to celebrate their milestone. The couple has four children, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. “The celebration was beautiful,” Elaine said. “The Bishop’s homily was something I needed to hear, it was like he was speaking to me personally. We were so impressed with him, the cathedral itself, his wonderful staff, etc. I am so happy that we went.
