BISHOP ED'S MISSION TRIP TO NIGERIA
February 22, 2023 at 5:43 p.m.
On his mission trip to Nigeria from Feb. 8-16, Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger, who was accompanied by Father Charles Onyeneke, parochial vicar at Blessed Sacrament Parish in Albany, got to meet the people of the Archdiocese of Lagos, celebrated Mass and met with potential seminarians who could eventually make their way to the Diocese of Albany. Bishop stayed in the Parish of St. Charles Borromeo, Victoria Island, Lagos, the entire time. Some highlights included: Meeting with Archbishop Alfred Martins in his residence at the Cathedral in Lagos on Feb. 10; visiting the Church of St. Mary in Ajegunle on Feb. 12 and saying Mass there; blessing the new Stella Maris rectory after Mass and having dinner with several priests and nuns; and meeting Father Philip Uchdendu, former secretary to the Archbishop of Lagos and current pastor of the parish of St. Peter Claver in Ajah, near the airport on Feb. 16. The best thing about the journey is that it did not cost the Diocese a single penny. Father Onyeneke’s plane ticket was paid for with redeemed airline miles from Father Thomas Hoar, SSE, the diocesan director of Vocations and Formation, and Bishop’s expenses will be reimbursed by the Pontifical Mission Societies after the people of Nigeria asked him to visit. Bishop Scharfenberger poses with the faithful after Mass at the seaside parish of Our Lady Star of the Sea in Ajah-Lekki.
