Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger went on a mission to Mexico City from Oct. 7-11, which he wrote about in last week’s column and also references in this week’s paper (Oct. 21) on page 5. These photos, including the one on the cover, bring a visual component to the trip in which Bishop said he “was changed and blessed” by the “humanity” of the poorest of the poor that he encountered in the country. The agency that sponsored the mission was Hope of the Poor (www.hopeofthepoor.org) and was arranged by Craig Johring, who has been organizing such trips for meeting and embracing the poor. During his time on the mission, Bishop Scharfenberger joined a group of pilgrims from a parish in Baltimore at the convent of Hermanas (Sisters) de la Concepciôn near the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, walked to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, visited people — children and adults — who live, literally, in the city dump, celebrated birthday parties there, and shared food and drink with the homeless in a city park.
