The second annual concert honoring the Virgin Mary, patroness of the Cathedral and the Catholic Diocese of Albany, was held Friday, Dec. 6, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Albany. This year, the featured work was the Missa Benedicta es Cælorum Regina, an “imitation Mass” by the Spanish Renaissance composer, Cristóbal de Morales. This program featured the Cathedral Choir and instrumentalists from the Musicians of Ma'alwyck, who doubled the vocal parts on modern instruments. The score from which they played was an arrangement by Brian Gurley, choirmaster and director of music at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, and applied techniques and research he has done on the polychoral works of another Spanish Renaissance composer, Tomás Luis de Victoria.
