Photo detail

The process for how one becomes a saint - Blessed Carlo Acutis and Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati are scheduled to be canonized on Sept. 7 - has changed greatly in the last 2,000 years to a more centralized approach that proceeds in three phases. The saints shown in the four photos are (from l.): St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus, St. Teresa of Avila, mystic and founder of the Discalced Carmelites, and the first female declared doctor of the church, Acutis and St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, patron of immigrants.
