WORD OF FAITH

Become a fire of healing and justice!

As we saw last week, we are moving swiftly to the end of this Liturgical Year. Jesus is turning up the heat, if you will, by raising our awareness about what is vital and what will be swept away at the end of the “age.”

The end is near!

That is the end of the Liturgical Year. In a few weeks, we will celebrate the feast of Christ the King of the Universe, the finale of the Year of Grace 2021!

Be like Zacchaeus!

The Gospel we proclaim this Sunday features a rather enigmatic figure, one whom we read about only in this Gospel passage: Zacchaeus.

Just read the Bible!

Have you ever had the opportunity to read the Bible cover to cover, from Genesis to Revelation? It is a wonderful experience which can help us get to know the story of salvation history. May I offer you some suggestions on how to do it?

‘Look, there he is’

The Gospel that we proclaim this Sunday is the very famous story of the Ten lepers.

Helping to set captives free

We see men and women standing by the roadside, on exit ramps and at the entrances of shopping centers in our cities and towns holding up signs asking for money.

Our faith calls us to be shrewd stewards

What does it mean to be a wise steward? Do we measure wisdom based on the standards of secular society?

What keeps you from faithful discipleship?

Are you a bit jarred by the Gospel for the Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time from Luke 14:25-33?

The virtue of humility

Humility is not perhaps a very popular virtue in our present culture and yet it is essential for human and spiritual growth.

Squeezing through the narrow gate (or turnstile!)

New York City has the subway and in London there is the underground (or, to use the local language, “the tube”). It is a great way of getting around a city, although I must admit that I prefer to use a bus or even to walk.

Jesus and fire

Whenever I hear the Gospel that we have for this Sunday, I always think of my six years as a seminary student out in Rome.

It is still summer: relax … but be alert and prepared!

The summer seems to be racing by at such a rapid pace (but then it always seems to do so!) and I think that soon we will be beginning to enter what we call those “dog days of summer.”

Gaining wisdom of heart

Many of Jesus’ parables are “hard to hear” because they are so challenging.
