PERSPECTIVE

What did Jesus do about hunger?

In 2014, we are compelled to face a moral, ethical and public policy failure of biblical proportions concerning hunger in New York State and the nation.

REFLECTION

Traditional vs. modern churches

Although "the Church" refers to all the Catholic faithful, the term "church" is also used to refer to houses of worship. What does a traditional church building consist of? The cathedrals of the middle ages were very lavish, while the modern church has become very minimalist.

PERSPECTIVE

What we learned from Sister Simone

More than 100 women religious, activists, contemplatives, elderly, young, middle-aged, Quakers, Catholics, former Catholics, Christians, unchurched, war veterans, peacemakers, teachers, social workers, retirees, parents and others got to listen to Sister Simone Campbell, SSS, at an annual peace retreat in January, sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph.

REFLECTION

A Mass and March for Life

"Tonight, we ride," my campus minister, Dan Pepe, said to me as we settled in on the bus, prepared to drive straight into a winter storm that was rumored to be hitting Washington, D.C., so we could attend the annual March for Life.

PERSPECTIVE

And you call yourselves Christians

In the 1960s, I served as vicar of St. Aidan's Episcopal Church in a Kansas City suburb. A story circulating in Kansas clerical circles at the time concerned a young, ambitious clergyman who had become pastor of a church of the Disciples of Christ denomination which identified itself as "The …
BISHOP'S COLUMN

Why Catholic schools use Common Core Standards

Last month, we observed our annual Catholic Schools Week celebration, which began with a Mass at our Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Albany, honoring people who have made outstanding contributions to our schools, and was followed by an art show and musical performance by our students at the Empire …

ADDRESSING LEGISLATURE

Buffalo bishop's testimony on education budget

I speak on behalf of Cardinal Timothy Dolan, our brother bishops and the more than quarter million students, parents, teachers and administrators who comprise the Catholic school community across the state.

SEMINARIAN'S DIARY

Interning at a parish

As part of formation for the priesthood, those of us in our second year of theology go to our home dioceses for a 10-week internship in a parish. I have been blessed to have the opportunity to return to Christ the King parish in Guilderland.

PERSPECTIVE

Thank you, mom with screaming child

I'd like to say a big "thank you" to the young mom with the screaming child I saw at the 10:30 a.m. Mass at St. John the Baptist Church, Valatie, on the feast of the Holy Family.

SEMINARIAN'S DIARY

A Lenten parable: Making maple syrup at the seminary

There are four old sugar maple trees gracing our driveway at Blessed John XXIII National Seminary in Weston, Mass. Our family used to tap a few trees on our Albany farm, and I thought it would be fun to tap a few trees here and boil a little syrup for …
REFLECTION

Lent on your mind

How's your mind lately? If it's anything like mine, there are times when you're sure it has turned completely to mush - those times when you stand in the middle of the room and can't remember what in heaven's name you came in for; or you go to the store …

REFLECTION

In memory of Matthew

His name was Matthew. Maybe you remember him. When he attended Mass, he sat on the parking lot side, near the door or in a seat on the left-side middle section.

REFLECTION

A new look at fasting

On Ash Wednesday, we began Lent with a Gospel reading (Mt 6:1-18) that spoke of the three great pillars of Lent: prayer, fasting and acts of charity. We should do these all the time, but in Lent they take on a special focus and intensity.

REFLECTION

Inspired by the Red Sox

My mother, Eleanor Lyons Hedderman, died on Aug. 24, 2012, at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany after a long illness. She was 84 years old.

THROUGH THE YEARS
