PERSPECTIVES
REFLECTION
An odyssey in Turkey
Imagine you're reading your favorite book and a letter arrives, offering the opportunity to spend a year living in the world the book describes. Three weeks after I graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in 2011 with a degree in classics and religious studies, that's exactly what happened …
SEMINARIAN'S DIARY
A future priest reflects on Called to be Church and growing love of God
Most Catholics know that a man who aspires to become a priest must be well-prepared for it, educated at a Catholic seminary. What often surprises some people is knowing that seminary preparation normally lasts for six years.
REFLECTION
Remembering Rev. Bill Shannon
Toward the end of my studies, I vowed to take whatever Rochester offered next - and so I was privileged to study acclaimed writer and Trappist monk Rev. Thomas Merton under Msgr. William Shannon, Ph.D.
WATERVLIET DECISION
Pastor explains reasons to sell St. Patrick's
It's not easy to say goodbye to a beloved home, and we understand the attachment that many have to St. Patrick's Church and all the memories it represents.
CARONDELET MUSIC CENTER
Taking note of 20 years
When Carondelet Music Center in Latham opened its doors at St. Joseph's Provincial House 20 years ago, there were two Kindermusik classes - one with four children and the other with six children.
'COME AND SEE'
A dying bishop ponders life
A little over a year ago, while in the middle of a very active West Coast confirmation schedule, I fell ill and was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. My prognosis was less than a year.
BISHOP'S LETTER
Collection supports communication

PERSPECTIVE
I am autistic -- and my parish welcomes me
Mom, the parishioner, my house manager and Father Anthony began working with me so I could make my First Communion. Many people said I would never sit in a pew, let alone make my First Communion. But on that Pentecost Sunday, Mom and the staff were shaking, watching the Holy …
PERSPECTIVE
New grad reflects on faith
God has always been a vital part of my life, whether I realized it or not. Since my freshman year of high school, I've been blessed to be a vital part of the youth ministry core team at Christ Our Light parish in Loudonville.
PERSPECTIVE
Choosing to use faith
Faith is a precious gift from God, given with no strings attached. We need only to accept faith to bring it alive. Once we accept it, it's up to us to decide whether we will use it.
SEMINARIAN'S DIARY
As one door opens, others do close
In May, I was ordained a transitional deacon for the Albany Diocese. As a seminarian, this marks my entrance into a year that will, God willing, lead to my ordination as a priest next June.
PERSPECTIVE
Life's curve balls
Having one bathroom to share with my parents and the seven kids in our family eliminated any need for parental lessons on the importance of sharing. It was not unusual to find a sibling in the shower, one on the commode and one brushing her teeth by the sink.
PERSPECTIVE
What I did on my summer vacation
We drove to Kennebunkport and rented a room at the Franciscan Guest House, an affordable and comfortable hotel on the grounds of St. Anthony's Monastery, run by the Franciscan Friars.
