The Congregation of the Sisters of the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ was founded in Rome in 1891 by a widow, Celine Borzecka and her daughter, Hedwig. In 1900, at the request of the Fathers of the Resurrection, Mother Celine sent four sisters to teach at St. Mary of the Angels Church in Chicago. All four sisters were young and in temporary vows. Mother Celine had great confidence and trust in them. The lead sister appointed by Mother Celine was Sister Anne Strzelecka, a well-educated woman who graduated from the Sorbonne University in France with a doctorate in biology. The sisters arrived at St. Mary of the Angels Parish on Feb. 2, 1900. Just days after their arrival, the sisters began teaching and were challenged with 100 students in each of their classes. In 1906, the Sisters of the Resurrection arrived at St. Mary’s Church in Schenectady, where they taught in the school and worked in the parish.

The basis of the spirituality of the Congregation is the Paschal Mystery of Salvation. By His death on the cross Christ overcame death; by His rising, He restored life. The sisters trust and firmly believe that, through Christ's power and out of love for Him, they too will be able to die to self and become partakers of that new, true and everlasting life which He gives to all who rise with him. The spirituality of the congregation is summarized in the words engraved on their profession cross: “Per crucem et mortem ad resurrectionem et gloriam” — “Through the cross and death to resurrection and glory.”

Today, the Sisters of the Resurrection are involved in the saving mission of the Church, in places where the Risen Christ needs hearts and hands to lead people to holiness. They serve in diocesan and parish work, schools, health care, and service to the poor. Every Sister of the Resurrection strives to be a messenger of hope, peace and joy, bringing the love of the Risen Lord to all they meet. To learn more, head to resurrectionsisters.org.

Wonderful community of sisters. They were at Immaculate Conception in Watervliet for many years and were amazing educators and compassionate women of faith.
