HAPPY 100TH!
Sunnyside Child Development Center, a longstanding community mainstay operated by Catholic Charities Tri-County Services, commemorated its 100th anniversary with a joyful celebration on July 23 in Troy. The centennial event, themed “Celebrating Our Past – Inspiring Our Future,” featured a formal program and special birthday cake-cutting ceremony.
The formal portion of the celebration was led by Jenn Hyde, Executive Director of Catholic Charities Tri-County Services. Highlights included a proclamation from Troy Mayor Carmella Mantello, a blessing by Sister Betsy Van Deusen, CSJ, CEO of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Albany, and heartfelt remarks from staff members and a former Sunnyside camper.
Guests enjoyed a lively afternoon of fun activities, guided tours of the center, and a display of time capsule items.“Sunnyside has created unforgettable memories for generations of youth and dedicated staff throughout its 100 years of operation. This celebration was all about honoring that amazing history and getting excited for what’s ahead,” Hyde said. “We’re so grateful to everyone who came out to celebrate with us. A special thanks to our sponsors, Pursuit, MKD Accounting and Advisory Services, and Bella Napoli for their partnership and belief in our mission.”
“Sunnyside embodies the heart of our mission of supporting children and families with compassion, dignity, and a deep commitment to their future,” Sister Betsy said. “For 10 decades, this center has been a beacon of hope in the Troy community. We’re proud to celebrate this legacy and look forward to the continued impact of Sunnyside for generations to come.”
“As Mayor of the City of Troy, it’s truly an honor to join in celebrating Sunnyside’s 100th anniversary,” added Mayor Mantello. “This center is so much more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a cornerstone of the community, and above all, it’s a family.”
“Sunnyside has been a second home for me for 31 years,” said Willie Short, former Sunnyside camper and camp counselor. “Bonds were formed here. Relationships were developed. Games were played. This place is very special. I owe everything to Sunnyside.”Established in 1925, Sunnyside Child Development Center in North Troy, has been a vital part of the community, offering a safe and enriching environment for children to learn, grow, and thrive. A program of Catholic Charities Tri-County Services, the center operates a daycare program serving children six weeks to 5 years of age; an after-school program for children in grades K-5; and a summer day camp for children 5-12 years of age.
