Organ Recital & Vespers on Ascension Day at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church (21 Hackett Blvd.) at 6:15 p.m. On Ascension Day, Immaculate Conception’s organist Brian Glikes will present Olivier Messiaen’s complete L’Ascension (Ascension Day) suite as a prelude to the Evensong service sung by St. Paul’s Choir. In L’Ascension, Messiaen reverently and creatively depicts four images from Christ’s Ascension: “The Majesty of Christ,” “Serene Alleluias of a Soul that Longs for the Heavens,” “Outbursts of Joy,” and “Prayer of Christ Ascending Towards His Father.” This 30-minute piece explores a vivid spectrum of sound, color and emotion, with dynamics from the quietest sound to the loudest, textures from just a solo lineup to 12 voices, and moods ranging from deep introspection to unabashed jubilation.
