Sister Mary Carmel Loftus, CR, 89
Sister Mary Carmel Loftus, CR, 89, died Sept. 4, at Riverside Nursing Home in Castleton. Sister Mary Carmel entered the community of the Sisters of the Resurrection on Oct. 26, 1960, and professed her final vows as a Sister of the Resurrection on Aug. 15, 1967. She celebrated the 60th anniversary of her religious profession in 2022. Sister Mary Carmel loved her religious vocation and faithfully devoted her life to God as a Sister of the Resurrection for 62 years.
Sister Mary Carmel’s ministry to God and the Church over the course of many years was mainly in the field of education as an elementary school teacher. Sister earned a degree in elementary education from Maria College in Albany and a bachelor’s in education from Georgian Court College in Lakewood, N.J. Her many years of ministry included service at Immaculate Conception in Watervliet, St. Mary’s in Schenectady, St. Casimir’s in Albany, St. Michael’s in Cohoes, St. Veronica’s in Howell, N.J., and St. Savior’s Day Care Nursery in New Bedford, Mass. She retired to the Provincial Home in 2001 and was admitted to Riverside Nursing Home in 2016.
Born in Dublin, Ireland, Sister Mary Carmel was the daughter of the late Patrick Loftus and Mary Graham Loftus. Sister Mary Carmel is predeceased by her parents and her brothers, Edward and William Loftus. She is survived by her sister, Patricia, her brothers, Patrick, Noel, Thomas (Rose) and her sister-in-law, Della Loftus. Sister Mary Carmel is also survived by several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Sept. 8, at the Sisters of the Resurrection Provincialate in Castleton. Interment was at Resurrection Cemetery in Castleton. Those desiring may send a remembrance in Sister Mary Carmel’s name to the Sisters of the Resurrection Memorial Fund, 35 Boltwood Ave., Castleton, N.Y., 12033.
