Sister Alexandra Jazwinski, CR: Celebrating 75 years as a Sister of the Resurrection
Sister Alexandra (daughter of Benjamin and Genevieve E. (Piekarski)) Jazwinski, CR, was born and raised in Yonkers. She is one of five children, having two brothers and two sisters. She was educated at St. Casimir School in Yonkers by the Sisters of the Resurrection. At the end of her freshman year at Sacred Heart High School in Yonkers, Sister Alexandra entered the Congregation on July 1, 1945. After completing high school and novitiate with the Sisters in Castleton, she attended Fordham University, graduating with a bachelor’s in education. She also completed studies in library science at Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and studies in administration at SUNY in Plattsburgh and Albany.
Sister Alexandra professed her first vows on Aug. 15, 1948, and her final vows on Aug. 15, 1953. She taught middle school students in the Archdiocese of New York (New York City, Poughkeepsie), as well as in the Diocese of Albany (St. Casimir School in Albany; St. Adalbert School in Schenectady; and St. Michael School in Cohoes). In 1981, Sister Alexandra was appointed principal of St. Veronica School in Howell, N.J., where she ministered until 1992. She was nominated and received recognition in “Who’s Who among American Teachers” in 1992.
For the next 18 years, Sister Alexandra served as a member of the Congregation’s General Administration in Rome, Italy. At the same time, she was appointed liaison between the Italian Primary School at the Mother House and the Congregation. Since 1982, Sister Alexandra has also worked with the Congregation’s Lay Association known as the Apostles of the Resurrection. These are women who feel called to live the charism of the Sisters of the Resurrection out in the world.
In October 2011, Sister Alexandra returned to the New York Province based in Castleton and now resides at the Provincial Home. She is currently in charge of the Provincial Archives.
Sister Alexandra strives to live what she “preaches” to others — the conviction of God’s unconditional love for each person from which flows a spirit of joy and trust in the strength of the Heart of the Risen Jesus!
