Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons School in Schenectady has announced the appointment of its new principal, Patrick Moran, effective immediately. Moran has served as interim principal of NDBG since September 2022.

Prior to taking on the role of interim principal, Moran served as assistant principal of NDBG from 2007-22, during which time he also served as athletic director and taught classes on both the middle-school and high-school levels. In 2017, he briefly served as interim principal for six months, always ready to step in and assist the school community when needed.

“Patrick is an accomplished leader with the heart of a teacher, which is the perfect skill set needed for the position of principal,” said Dr. Giovanni Virgiglio, superintendent of schools for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany. “His deep knowledge of and commitment to the Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons community will allow him to guide this school and its students forward into a future of continued growth and excellence.”

Prior to joining the staff of NDBG, Moran taught middle-school social studies and religion at St. Teresa of Avila School in Albany from 1999-2007. He holds a master’s degree in education and school leadership from The College of Saint Rose in Albany and a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from SUNY Plattsburgh. He graduated from Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons in 1993.

“Patrick Moran has been a guiding presence at Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons for 15 years, and it’s clear from his track record that he is a team player in every sense of the word,” Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger said of the appointment. “We are so glad he has accepted this position, and we know that he will put the school, its students and their families at the forefront of all he does.”

Moran says he considers the school to be his “fourth child,” and pledged to serve the NDBG community as he takes on his new role.

“I am grateful and humbled for the opportunity that Dr. Virgiglio and Bishop Scharfenberger have extended to me through this appointment to lead Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons School into the future,” Moran said. “As a graduate of NDBG, and a product of our Catholic schools, I understand the important role Catholic schools take on in sharing the teachings of our Church with young people. In addition, we bear the responsibility of providing an exceptional and well-rounded education to our students. I aim to emphasize growth in these two areas in my new role.”

Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons High School currently enrolls 220 students in grades 6-12.

The school serves a diverse ethnic, religious and socio-economic student body from a wide geographical area and is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
