The Evangelist won seven Catholic Press Association awards, including a first-place honor for photographer Cindy Schultz. The awards were announced on the final night of the Catholic Media Conference in Baltimore on June 9.

Schultz, who is no stranger to winning first-place honors, took top prize in the Best Photograph — Feature Photo category for her photo of Father Leo Patalinghug, who brought his Lenten cooking series to St. Clement’s Church in Saratoga Springs last March. Here is what the judges said of the photo: “This is just a super fun photo that makes the viewer/reader want to know more. Excellent skill at capturing the emotion and energy of the moment! It’s the type of photo that just brightens one’s day. Great job!”

“Cindy proves year-in and year-out that she is one of the best photographers not only in the Capital District, but the whole state of New York,” said Mike Matvey, editor. “We are blessed to have her working with The Evangelist.”

Staff writer Emily Benson took home three awards across three writing categories. She won third place in the category of Best Analysis/Background/Round-Up News Writing — The Gerard E. Sherry Award — Weekly for her remembrance of Catholic Central School student Danielle Marceline (shown at bottom l.). The judges said: “Compassionate and detailed reporting of a story focusing on the life and death of a beloved teenager and how deeply her loss has been felt by an entire community. The writer does well to present a sense of grief, anger and a glimmer of lasting hope that comes with faith.”

Benson also took honorable mention in two categories: Best Feature Writing — Weekly for her story on the Sisters of Life titled “Sacredness of Life.” (The judges said: “Detailed description of the ordinary — meal prep, but of bison! — draws in (the) reader to discover where the colorful depiction will lead. And where it leads is to a well-crafted story that captures the spirit of the Sisters of Life”); and Best Reporting on a Special Age-Group — Senior Citizens for her story titled “Saint Jo” about Jo Kaczmarek, who founded the faith-formation program at St. Mary’s in Glens Falls (shown at top l.).

“Emily continues to hone her craft as a writer,” Matvey said. “It is no surprise to me that she was honored in three different and distinct categories.”

Matvey also received honorable mention in the category of Best Reporting on Catholic Education for his story on Catholic Central School titled “Brand New.”

The Evangelist staff of Benson, Matvey, Schultz and designer Brenda Powell took third place and honorable mention in the Best Seasonal Issue — Print category for the “Year in Review” issue (“Really great theme. Love the cover. Great and well communicated concept,” the judges said) and the “Back to School issue” (“Nice design. Great use of photographs that really communicate the story. Love the cover. Good writing. Strong storytelling overall,” the judges said.).
