100 YEARS OF CAMP SCULLY

WYNANTSKILL — On June 21, Catholic Charities Tri-County Services’ Camp Scully celebrated a major milestone: 100 years of service to children and families in the region. The celebration included a tour of the newly-renovated campgrounds, a blessing by Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger and a reception.

Camp Scully’s anniversary year kicked off with a lofty goal: to raise the funds for much-needed renovations to ensure the camp remains a place for children from all walks of life to learn and grow each summer. The camp has since undergone major improvements, including the addition of a retaining wall and fresh sand on the beach, a repaved entry road and cabin improvements. Older cabins received fresh siding and exhaust fans were added to help campers keep cool on hot summer days. All told, over $70,000 of improvements were made to the camp.

These renovations were made possible with the support of community members and local businesses, including Prime Companies.

“I cannot think of a better way to celebrate Camp Scully’s 100th anniversary than having our community partners, staff and volunteers work together to bring these renovations to fruition. The cabins, the beach and the road will help provide a safer and richer experience to our campers for generations to come,” said Vincent W. Colonno, CEO of Catholic Charities. “ I am so grateful to Prime Companies and to all of our donors on this project. Camp Scully is truly a testament to what we can accomplish when we work together.”

“For 100 years, Camp Scully has been a safe and cheerful oasis for children in the Capital Region. Camp Scully was established in 1920 with the mission of providing a safe and healthy environment for children in the Capital Region. Each summer, scholarships for the camp’s overnight program are awarded based on need. Camp Scully’s 2021 season began on June 27 at full capacity after COVID-19 restrictions forced the camp to limit registrations in 2020. The program will serve over 1,120 children from all income levels and backgrounds this summer.

“I am so proud of the staff, volunteers and donors of Camp Scully,” said Jenn Hyde, executive director of Catholic Charities Tri-County Services. “Together, they have built a place for children to enjoy their time as children. At Camp Scully, kids of all walks of life come together to make new friendships and new summer memories.”

For years, Camp Scully has provided children and adolescents with the opportunity to participate in an educational recreation program, fostering socialization skills in a natural environment. The camp is rooted in six core values guiding daily life: Service, Caring, Understanding, Love, Loyalty and Youthfulness. Campers earn “letters” as they embody these values by helping others, displaying sportsmanship, sharing and demonstrating a positive attitude.

By promoting acceptance of oneself and others through the social, recreational and educational opportunities the camp provides, Camp Scully is a place where children develop the confidence to rise to their full potential and, in turn, become contributing members of our greater community.
