Father James J. Kane, who celebrated the 50th anniversary of his Ordination to the Priesthood on May 26, was honored by the New York State Senate on the same day.

Resolution No. 903 by Senator Neil D. Breslin detailed the five decades that Father Kane has served the priesthood in the Diocese of Albany and beyond.

“It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when a person of such noble aims and accomplishments is brought to our attention it is appropriate to publicly and jubilantly proclaim and commend that individual for the edification of others,” the resolution read. “Now, therefore, be it that this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to congratulate Reverend James J. Kane upon the occasion of celebrating the 50th Anniversary of his Ordination to the Priesthood, noting his unremitting and compassionate faith and his exemplary service to God, man, and his community, and extending to him heartfelt best wishes for a future of continued purposeful success and well-being.”

The rest of the resolution read:
“Born in Buffalo, New York, James J. Kane attended St. Thomas Aquinas (1959), Bishop Timon High School (1963), and Our Lady of Angels Seminary in Glenmont, New York; and (was) ordained to the priesthood in 1971 for the Ogdensburg, New York, Catholic Diocese, Father James J. Kane then moved to Albany, New York, in 1976.

“Throughout his illustrious career, Father James J. Kane served at numerous parishes throughout New York State, including St. Agnes in Lake Placid, St. Patrick’s in Port Henry, and St. Bernard’s in Saranac Lake.

“From 1976 through the present time, Father James J. Kane served nine parishes within the Albany Roman Catholic Diocese, including St. Jude’s in Wynantskill, Sacred Heart in Albany, St. Helen’s in Niskayuna, St. Vincent de Paul in Albany, St. Mary’s in Gloversville, St. Agnes-St. Patrick in Cohoes, St. Peter’s in Stillwater, Assumption/St. Paul in Mechanicville, St. Patrick’s in Ravena, and Christ Our Light in Loudonville.

“Furthermore, Father James J. Kane is an Honorary Canon at the Episcopal Cathedral of All Saints in Albany, New York; and has served as Director of the Commission of Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany, appointed by then Bishop Howard Hubbard in 1982.

“An admired and respected leader in the State of New York, Capital District, and beyond, Father James J. Kane, in the area of ecumenical and interfaith relations, has devoted himself to this effort for over 40 years. Additionally, Father James J. Kane and Bishop Hubbard accompanied groups on three goodwill trips to Israel in the 1980s, leading to the first reconciliation service between Jews and Catholics in 1986, an event marked by the sculpture, “Portal,” at the Albany Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

“Father James J. Kane continues to foster positive change and spiritual dialogue in the Capital District, promoting mutual respect and understanding among faith communities within the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany.”
