On Sept. 7, 2016, my life drastically changed.

It was my first day at Blessed Sacrament School. I went to public school for seven years prior so it was a dramatic change for me. The scenery, the kids, the teachers, the lunch, the work methods, they were all completely different for me. On the way to school I was livid. Seventh grade was my hardest year at BSS. I almost got expelled more than five times in the year. There were many incidents where I thought I wouldn’t be returning to the school. But through the grace of God, I made it through.

To fast forward to this year, I came ready as I was used to the private school way. I was now close with all the teachers, the students and the lunch. But this year, I would set my goal, a goal I have been trying to get to for two years. This goal was the social studies award.

I was always good at social studies, but this year I would try even harder as I promised I would hand in homework early so my grade would escalate. My eighth grade year started off great. I was never sent down to the office and in my first quarter I had a high-honor roll grade point average. But in the middle of the year it would all come crashing down. I started getting sent down (to the office) more and more, yet all in the same classes. Those classes were computers, Spanish and ELA. I was great in all of these classes academically but, behaviorally, I would talk, scream, laugh and just be an overall distraction. So in my second quarter, I only had an 89-grade point average. This was not even enough for honor roll.

My third quarter I was determined to redeem myself. It was a breeze as I achieved honor roll for the second time. My Spanish grade improved and I received a 9,9,10 on my Spanish speaking test. Now in the fourth quarter with graduation right around the corner, I am ahead of my class in social studies with a grade of 103. In conclusion, my years at Blessed Sacrament School were filled with ups and downs. I have learned a lot within the three years I have been here. And I can truly say, I am glad I met these people here!

Roland Riggins, 14, is an eighth-grader at Blessed Sacrament School and enjoys hanging out with friends and having a good time.
