Dominican Sisters of Peace mark 10th anniversary with tree planting
The Dominican Sisters of Peace held a tree-planting ceremony last week at the Dominican Retreat and Conference Center to commemorate the 10th anniversary of their order.
The tree planting is the first in a year-long series of celebrations to mark the religious congregation’s first decade of ministry. In Niskayuna, two Cortland apple trees were planted and a commemorative plaque was installed. Dominican Sisters and Associates held a prayer ceremony to mark the occasion, as well.
“The theme for our 10th anniversary celebration is ‘Rooted in the Word. Preaching Peace,’ ” said Sister Pat Twohill, the Congregation’s Prioress. “What better way to celebrate our own deep roots in Scripture, our commitment to God’s creation, and our hope in the future than by planting a beautiful tree at the Dominican Retreat and Conference Center.”
The Dominican Sisters of Peace, members of the pontifical Order of Preachers, are vowed Catholic women who strive to live a life of peacemaking. The Dominican Sisters of Peace are present in 22 states and two countries. The sisters serve God’s people in many ways, including education, health care, spirituality, pastoral care, prison ministry, the arts, and care of creation. There are 441 sisters and over 700 lay associates affiliated with the congregation.
The Dominican Retreat and Conference Center is a place of peace and safety open to all people who seek to grow in relationship with themselves, others, and their God. For more information, visit www.dslcny.org.
