Students for Life of America is coming to the Albany Diocese.

The non-profit organization is dedicated to ending abortion by educating, recruiting and developing pro-life leaders in schools and colleges across the country. Students work with Students for Life (SFL) regional coordinators to establish pro-life clubs and events at their school or campus, all while striving to spread the pro-life message and agenda.

Kate Maloney, Northeast regional coordinator for Students for Life, started working with the Albany Diocese in February about how to bring SFL to their Catholic schools.

“I know there are pro-life people in New York state and pro-life youth,” Maloney said. “Some people are just waiting for an invitation, so I think that’s what’s going on for students, especially in high school. They’re waiting for an invitation … then they’re super happy to be on board.”

Renee Morgiewicz, coordinator for parish services and respect life ministry, connected with Maloney in January about coming to the Diocese. She noted that the Students for Life organization “equip(s) people with excellent tools for evangelization.”

“Students for Life of America teach youth and young adults how to discourse with their diverse thoughts in a loving way and to encourage dialogue,” Morgiewicz said. “These skill sets help our students to be unafraid of engaging in what many would call ‘difficult conversations.’”

On March 11, Maloney spoke to middle-schoolers at St. Mary’s Institute in Amsterdam and will be doing a series of pro-life trainings with the school until the end of the year. Some of her trainings include looking at fetal models and discussing what it means to be pro-life.

Maloney noted that all her trainings are age-appropriate: “I want to educate them. I don’t want to scare them.”

Maloney also spoke at the recent Albany Diocesan Principal’s meeting on March 13 at the Carondelet Hospitality Center in Latham. The regional coordinator talked about her mission with SFL and willingness to make more connections with the Diocese.

“I have a great love for this area,” Maloney said. “We’re right by the state capital (and) there’s such good resources here to really bring the pro-life light to New York state that we know is here.”
