Mike Matvey named editor of The Evangelist

Michael Matvey, a former senior editor at the New York Daily News, has been named editor of The Evangelist, the weekly newspaper of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany, effective Jan. 28. He succeeds Kate Blain, who resigned from the position in early December.

A resident of Niskayuna, Matvey brings 25 years of newspaper experience to the position. He was a senior content editor at the Daily News from 2004 until 2018. Prior to that, he worked as a writer, editor and designer at various daily publications, including the Albany Times Union and the Middletown Times-Herald Record.

“This is an exciting new era in The Evangelist’s long history, and I’m looking forward to seeing where Mike’s vision and creativity, along with his obvious news background, will take the publication,” said Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger, who is publisher of The Evangelist and chairman of its board. “While we want to continue to serve our faithful print readers going forward, we also want to broaden our reach to those who access news mainly on digital platforms and social media. We are especially interested in creating content that will inspire and inform young people, who are so important a part of the life of the Church.”

The Evangelist, which is published 48 times a year, covers 14 counties and has a circulation of 34,000, making it the highest-circulation weekly in the Capital District.
