The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception echoed with the gorgeous sounds of Haydn’s “Missa Cellensis,” performed by the Cathedral Choir on Dec. 7.

During the evening performance, the Cathedral Choir moved from a cappella selections to organ solos by David Harrison to Schubert’s “Ave Maria” performed by tenor Joshua Jacobs. Though the Friday evening was chilly, pews were full; the youngest audience members alternately squirmed and sat entranced, while couples snuggled closely together. Bishop Scharfenberger was spotted in the middle of the audience, enjoying the sacred music selection with eyes closed in silent reflection.

The Cathedral Choir of Adults and Children was conducted by Dr. Brian F. Gurley and accompanied by a Cathedral Chamber Orchestra. Additional works by Bruckner and Howells were also performed, along with Victoria Alma Redemptoris. The cathedral itself was festive as a large Advent wreath served as a backdrop to the choir, and an evergreen and calla lily arrangement graced a statue of the Blessed Mother in honor of the feast of the Immaculate Conception.
