OBITUARY

Sister Luke Marie (Florence Anne) Capling, SNJM

A funeral Mass was offered Dec. 5 in the chapel at St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham, for Sister Luke Marie Capling, who died Nov. 29. She was 90 and had been a Holy Names sister for 64 years.

A native of Fort Meyers, Fla., she began her career in pediatric nursing and, in religious life, was a nurse for the Holy Names novitiate in Rome, N.Y. She then served as infirmarian at the Academy of the Holy Names in Albany, watching over the sisters and students for 19 years and mentoring three other sisters who became nurses. Later, she served for 18 years in a hospital in Tampa, Fla.; and 10 years as campus nurse at the Academy of the Holy

Names in Tampa. She also cared for several teachers’ children.

Sister Luke is recalled for “artfully serving” her religious community as a sister and a medical authority, having aided in the care and health planning decisions of hundreds of sisters. They called her “a model of resilient strength, noble character, compassionate care and loving service.”

Survivors include a sister, Carolyn. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery, Glenmont.
