PRAYER FOR THE WEEK
Jesus, help me remember that, if I don’t love everything about school, there are parts I do like! Amen.
Jesus told all His followers that He came from heaven. Many didn’t believe Him and even stopped following Him. Jesus asked the Apostles, “Are you going to leave me, too?” “Where would we go?” Peter answered. “We know that you came from God.”
Starting school is a joyful time for a lot of kids, but even kids who absolutely love school might not love every single thing about it. You may love math, but English makes you groan; you may ace classwork, but have a hard time making friends.
The fact is, though, you have to go to school. It’s the law. If there are things you don’t like about it, all you can do is focus on the parts you love!
This week’s Gospel (John 6:60-69) explores that idea. Jesus has been teaching people about God and telling them He’s the Son of God, and a bunch of people don’t believe Him. Fewer people follow Him, and Jesus sounds a little discouraged as He asks the Apostles, “Are you next?” He’s wondering if even His closest friends will stop believing in Him.
Peter’s answer could apply to you, when there are parts of school you’re not looking forward to: “Where else would we go?”
Peter is saying that the Apostles understand there are hard parts to everything in life. The Apostles have chosen to stick with Jesus; they’re not going anywhere, even when times get tough.
If you’re great at P.E. but struggle with homework, do what the Apostles did: Focus on the good parts. School is starting, and you know gym class will be awesome! You can stretch your muscles, feel good about hitting a ball or making a basket and even try out for a team.
As for the rest, ask for help and say a prayer. You’ll get through it. Even Jesus and the Apostles got through their toughest times!
