The 80 musicians filled the sanctuary and played for more than 300 people. The music “rocked the whole assembly to our very foundation,” the parish reported....
EVA MARIE LOUCKS of St. Mary’s parish in Ballston Spa, an artist and speaker on Mary, notes that, during “the beautiful month of May, dedicated to Mary, the Mother of God,” Catholics should follow five steps to find peace: prayer, fasting, attending Mass, reading the Bible and receiving the sacrament of reconciliation. “Mary asks mothers to pray constantly for their children, consecrating them to her Immaculate Heart and the Sacred Heart of Jesus,” Ms. Loucks adds. “Let us take this opportunity we have before us for peace. Pray the holy Rosary with and through Mary during with beautiful month of May and seek her help and protection, asking her for God’s peace for the world”....
In recognition of the 50th anniversary of the assassination of the REV. DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR., the MLKSaratoga organization sponsored a silent march April 4 from the Saratoga Springs City Center on Broadway to Congress Park. Various bells throughout the city were requested to ring at 6:05 p.m., the time of Dr. King’s passing. The Church of St. Peter, directly across from the park, participated by tolling its bell 39 times, representing Dr. King’s age in 1968. A brief reflection on his life followed.

April 4 marked 50 years since the assassination of the REV. DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. Siena College in Loudonville hosted the annual Martin Luther King Jr. and CORETTA SCOTT KING lecture series on race and non-violent social change. This series explores how prejudice in the country and world can be confronted effectively through efforts informed by social justice and non-violent action. The co-chairs of the advisory board are Capital Region activist ANNE POPE and DR. LISA NEVAREZ, professor of English at Siena. Siena also held a remembrance of Dr. King on April 4 in front of its library.
Siena’s Franciscan Center for Catholic Studies and Environmental Studies and Sciences Department and Messiah Lutheran Church in Rotterdam partnered to bring renowned environmental ethicist LARRY RASMUSSEN to the Capital Region for two talks: “How Do We Hymn the Earth in a Time of Climate Change,” and, “Science, Ethics, Theology: Three Imperatives for Earth”....
St. Mary’s Healthcare in Amsterdam has been recognized by the National Safe Sleep Hospital Certification Program as a leader for best practices and education on infant safe sleep. The hospital is one of only two hospitals in the region certified as a safe sleep hospital for newborns. A safe sleep environment means always placing a baby on his or her back to sleep to reduce the risk of SIDS; using a firm sleep surface, covered by a fitted sheet; using a crib, bassinet, portable crib or play yard that conforms to the safety standards of the Consumer Product Safety Commission; not having a baby sleep in an adult bed, couch, chair, bouncy seat, swing, infant carrier or stroller; keeping the baby’s sleep area in the same room where the parents sleep for the first year; keeping soft objects such as pillows, blankets, toys and bumpers out of the baby’s sleep area; not using wedges and positioners; not smoking during pregnancy or allowing smoking around the baby; not allowing the baby to get too hot during sleep; breastfeeding; giving the baby a dry pacifier not attached to a string for naps and at night; giving the baby supervised skin-to-skin contact with the mother immediately following birth; and following healthcare provider guidance on the baby’s vaccines and regular checkups. Christian Brothers Academy in Albany held a signing ceremony April 16 for two athletes to play college baseball. DREW CARROLL will attend LeMoyne College in Syracuse; for CBA, he’ll bat lead-off again this season and will start at shortstop. ADAM ZEBROWSKI will play for St. John Fisher College in Rochester. His defense and ability to manage the pitching staff are his strengths.
