Writing prizes given

In competition with more than 100 Catholic newspapers from throughout the U.S. and Canada, The Evangelist won three prizes last week at the annual convention of the Catholic Press Association. The competition covered material that appeared in the newspapers during 1997.

Cited by the judges were a regular column, an editorial and a special issue:

* The judges awarded a second prize for best column on the arts to James Breig, editor of The Evangelist, for his weekly TV column (it appears on page 25 this week). Out of the columns entered, they cited especially one he wrote lambasting sensational television coverage of the JonBenet Ramsey murder.

* A third prize for best seasonal issue was awarded to The Evangelist's Easter 1997 issue, which was devoted to Jesus. The judges called the 15-page section "thorough, consistent and fascinating," and highlighted its inclusion of an article about Jewish understanding of Jesus. The special issue was the work of the entire editorial staff of The Evangelist, including Kate Blain, assistant editor; Maureen McGuinness, staff writer; and Ann Hauprich.

* Honorable mention was given to The Evangelist for best editorial for Mr. Breig's piece titled "Thoughts on God, men and the Yankees," which appeared in the Oct. 9 issue. It dealt with that team's failure to advance in the baseball playoffs and how men reacted to it emotionally.
