WORKING ON IT
PRAYER FOR THE WEEK: Jesus, help me figure out how I work best. Amen!
What kind of worker are you? Some kids like to do things a little at a time -- to work, take a break, and then go back and work some more. Other kids do all their homework or chores in one big spurt of working, and then they're done. Everyone works differently, but unless you don't get your chores or homework finished, that's okay. In fact, people learned about that in this week's Gospel (Matthew 20:1-16). The workers hired by the farmer at the beginning of the day did all the work they were asked to do. The ones he hired later on did their work, too, even though they had less time to do it. Even the ones who worked just a little bit still deserved to get paid -- they didn't work for a long time, but they did do everything they were told to. If you start your homework right away, it's easy to get mad at your sister because she leaves hers until the last minute. But if both of you get your work done, you should probably take the farmer's advice -- leave your sister alone! Just because she finishes last doesn't mean she's wrong. Both of you have to just keep on working! "Heaven is like a farmer who hired people to work in his fields," Jesus said. "He hired some at 9 a.m., some at noon, more in the afternoon and more later. At the end of the day, the farmer paid them all the same amount. The ones who'd worked longer grumbled. `I'm not cheating you!' the farmer said. `I promised you a day's pay, and you're getting it. So what if I want to pay these people just as much? It's my money.'" Jesus added: "The first will be last, and the last will be first."
