As positive as her family's experience has been at St. James parish in Albany, Sheila Shea wishes the Diocese would do more to assist families with members who are deaf or hearing impaired. She noted that it was mostly through the efforts of families like hers that St. James became a haven for deaf children.

"I would like to see more support for faith formation," she stated. "I have felt at times that it's a burden, that I can't do this alone. Having an interpreter be available for faith formation would be helpful."

She wondered if, like some church organists and cantors, interpreters could receive a stipend for their work. She also hoped to see more education and training offered for Catholics who want to become interpreters -- for instance, compensation to attend workshops on signing offered at The College of Saint Rose in Albany.

"There's a whole community out there of people that are hard of hearing," she added. "They need assisted listening devices [like those offered at St. James] and better seating at church." (KB)
