PERSPECTIVE
Why I want to attend a Catholic high school
There are numerous high schools in our area that provide a great education. Not all provide an education built on the cornerstone of faith. I believe it is very important to go to a Catholic high school.
Faith is a very important part of my life. Of all my experiences thus far in my 14 years, the four years I have been altar-serving have been the most fulfilling. My strong faith has been my foundation and my rock.
At a public high school, one is more likely to lose the faith. Being around people from all different faiths (and, of course, some with no faith at all), one is more likely to lose confidence in God and start to question the importance of the Catholic Church.
This is not to say that being around people from diverse backgrounds is a bad thing. At a Catholic high school, though, you are not only around students with the same faith, but you are taught about Christian values and the importance of having a relationship with Jesus!
In the words of Pope Francis, "Catholic educational institutions offer to all an approach to education that has as its aim the full development of the person, which responds to the right of every person to access knowledge. However, they are also called upon to offer, with full respect for the freedom of each person and using the methods appropriate to the scholastic environment, the Christian belief: that is, to present Jesus Christ as the meaning of life, the cosmos and history."
At a public school, the role of Jesus has been downgraded significantly, just as it has been in the secular environment. In order to stay close to Jesus, it is practically essential to go to a Catholic high school.
During my years at St. Pius X School in Loudon-ville, my faith has been able to grow exponentially. I have been provided with an environment where it is possible to develop a loving, unconditional relationship with Jesus. I have chosen to go to LaSalle Institute in Troy for high school. I would like to develop my faith even more, and fully understand what God is calling me to do in my life.
I believe that, at a public high school, God is pushed off-stage and a person's material growth is considered in choosing one's path. This is not what I would like to do. I would like to do what God is calling me to do in my life.
I am looking forward to the four years ahead of me at LaSalle Institute. As the school motto, "Signum fidei" ("The sign of faith"), says, my own personal faith can only become deeper, richer and an even more important part of my life, as well as a sign to others of God's love.
