LEAD STORY: Students offer views on key issues

* JENNEANE BUTLER attends Bishop Maginn High School in Albany. Her favorite subject is Spanish, which she has been taking since kindergarten. The 13-year-old is a parishioner at St. Joseph's Church in Rensselaer and graduated from St. Joseph's/St. John's Academy. Besides Spanish, her interests include tennis, basketball and community service. She has one older brother.

While the transition to high school was difficult, she believes she had an advantage since her brother was already attending the school. "I knew what it would be like," she said.

Jenneane is enjoying high school so far. "I like Bishop Maginn because it's not that big. You can get to know everybody. The teachers are really nice. They're dedicated and stay after school if you need help. They try and help you the best way they can."

* JUSTIN FITCH is a 15-year-old Troy resident. The non-Catholic has attended Catholic Central High School in Troy since junior high. He was the junior high editor of the school newspaper and a member of the science club. His favorite subjects are math and science.

The youngest of three boys advises adults to pay attention to teenagers. "Stick with them," he said. "They might screw up, but they like you. It's harder than you think. There are a lot of things they see and go through."

* MEGHAN O'CONNOR, a 14-year-old parishioner of St. Joseph's in Scotia, is the second of four children. The Notre Dame/Bishop Gibbons freshman finds it challenging balancing her interests. Besides her involvement in school activities, she cares for her horse, works at a polo horse farm and volunteers with the Saratoga Therapeutic Equine Program for handicapped children. Her favorite subject is English.

* JEB TOWNE is one of six children. The 14-year-old attends St. Clement's in Saratoga Springs and St. Joseph's in Greenwich. A sports enthusiast, he plays baseball, basketball and soccer. His favorite subject is math. As a member of a large family, he said, sharing is second nature. "You get used to sharing. My parents say I'm more generous with things than other people." (MM)
