Who's there? Jesus!

Knock, knock! (You say, "Who's there?")

Boo! ("Boo who?")

Don't cry!

Why do kids love knock-knock jokes so much? It's probably because they're fun. Every question has an answer, and then it turns into something silly at the end!

Jesus would have loved knock-knock jokes, too. Sometimes, His teachings kind of sound like one -- like in this week's Gospel (John 15:9-17).

"Just like my Father loves me, I love you," said Jesus. "Stay in my love. If you keep my commandments, you'll stay in my love. This is my commandment: Love one another as I love you."

When you tell a knock-knock joke, you're asking questions that get people to answer you, so they "follow" you right to the funny part.

Jesus wanted people to follow Him, too, so He tried to make it easy to understand what He taught, so people could jump right in and start getting closer to God.

Knock-knock jokes always go step-by-step: Question, answer, question, answer, LAUGH!

Jesus' teaching about how to love people goes the same way: Does God love Jesus? Yes! Does Jesus love people? Of course! How can people stay close to Jesus? By loving each other as much as He loves us!

Told another way, the Gospel story could go like this:

Knock, knock! ("Who's there?")

Jesus! ("Jesus who?")

Jesus who loves you -- so love other people, too!

Now, that's an easy joke to remember!

PRAYER FOR THE WEEK: Jesus, teach me to love people as much as you do -- and to have fun, too! Amen.
