Who is new bishop?
Here are a few facts about Bishop-elect Scharfenberger, the soon-to-be 10th Bishop of Albany and successor to Bishop Howard J. Hubbard:
• native of Brooklyn
• 65 years old
• speaks several languages: German, Italian, Spanish, French, Polish; also knows some Russian and is learning Hebrew and Portuguese
• both parents 93 years old: Edward and Elaine Scharfenberger of Warwick, N.Y.
• four siblings: Miriam Muse (Glenn), James Scharfenberger and Dr. Dennis Scharfenberger, MD, (Anna), all of Warwick; and Lois Sheptuck (Deacon Paul) of Edison, N.J.
• four nephews and two nieces; one nephew is deceased
• attended Catholic schools; graduated as an English major in 1968 from Cathedral College of the Immaculate Conception, Douglaston, N.Y.
• studied theology at North American College, Rome, Italy; earned bachelor's degree in sacred theology from Pontifical Gregorian University in 1972
• ordained a priest July 2, 1973, in St. Peter's Basilica, Rome, by Bishop James A. Hickey, who later became Cardinal-Archbishop of Washington, D.C.
• served as parochial vicar (associate pastor) at St. Stanislaus parish in Maspeth, N.Y., and St. Ephrem parish in Dyker Heights until 1976
• returned to Rome for further studies: licentiate in sacred theology from Academy of St. Alphonsus, 1977
• canon (Church) law degree from Catholic University of America, 1980
• law degree from Fordham University, 1990; admitted to the bar in New York, 1991
• served in a number of capacities in the diocesan Tribunal of Brooklyn for 20 years: judicial vicar for the Diocese of Brooklyn (overseeing diocesan Marriage Tribunal and serving as chief canonical advisor to the bishop), 1993-2002
• also exercised pastoral ministry at Our Lady of Mercy Church in Forest Hills and St. Matthew's Church in Dix Hills
• named a monsignor in 1995
• administrator of diocesan Board of Mediation and Arbitration for past 15 years, as well as chaplain of the Kings County Catholic Lawyers Guild
• has taught moral theology at diocesan Pastoral Institute and at St. Joseph's College in Brooklyn Diocese
• in 2002, appointed pastor of St. Matthias Church in Ridgewood, a large, multi-ethnic parish; served for 12 years
• also served as promoter of justice for the Brooklyn Diocese and was a member of the Diocesan Review Board for Sexual Abuse of Minors
• most recent assignments included vicar for strategic planning, 2009-present, and episcopal vicar (doing pastoral supervision of a part of a diocese) for Queens area of Brooklyn Diocese, 2013-present[[In-content Ad]]
