Where were the Christians?

By MAEVE SMITH- | Comments: 0 | Leave a comment

My grandparents were German Jews who escaped the Holocaust. People ask, "Where were Christians during the Holocaust?" I am grateful to brave Christians such as Dietrich Bonhoeffer, St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross and St. Maximilian Kolbe who stood up to the evil of Nazism and gave their lives as a result.

With more than 50 million preborn children killed by abortion, this is our holocaust. Someday abortion will end and will appear in the history books as the American genocide - and people will ask, "Where were the Christians?"

When I and others pray outside of Planned Parenthood, people occasionally ask, "Don't you have anything better to do?" No. Protecting the vulnerable is and always has been the work of Christians. Jesus said, "Love one another as I have loved you" (Jn 13:34-35).

The preborn child, just like the Jew in Nazi Germany, has been dehumanized and therefore can be destroyed. Many believe that trying to dissuade a woman from having an abortion is taking away her "choice," but is it choice when she's lied to about the development of her preborn child and never given the support to have her child, however fearful she is?

According to the "Forced Abortion in America" report, more than 64 percent of women having abortions are coerced (see www.theunchoice.com). Someone - a boyfriend, parent or clinic worker - is applying subtle or overt pressure on a woman to have an abortion. Very few people, if any, are saying to her, "You can do this. Have hope. God loves you. God created this new life. I'll support you." This is what we do when we're out on the street.

Recently, I was praying outside Planned Parenthood and holding the sign, "Scared? We can help." A man stopped his car and called out, "I have my son because people like you were praying here!"

If you have ever thought, "What can I do about abortion?" there is a powerful movement you can join! The 40 Days for Life campaign invites people of all faiths to 40 days of peaceful vigil outside abortion clinics, sustained by prayer and fasting. In the past nine years, 40 Days for Life claims to have saved more than 7,500 babies, closed 37 abortion centers and helped 83 workers to leave the abortion industry.

Campaigns will occur locally in Schenectady and Cobleskill Sept. 25-Nov. 3. If you don't think about abortion, it's time you do. This is not a political issue; it's a life issue. We are not passing judgment; we speak to women with compassion, hope and love.

Abortion is an absolute evil in God's sight. Edmund Burke said, "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." Please join 40 Days for Life and be the light of Christ for people in darkness and need. Hopefully, future generations won't have to ask the question, "Where were the Christians?"
