PRAYER FOR THE WEEK
Jesus, help me remember that, when something big happens, I have help to get through it! Amen.

Jesus took Peter, James and John up a mountain. As they watched, His face and clothes suddenly got as bright as the sun! Moses and Elijah, famous prophets, also appeared. Then God the Father's voice said from heaven, "This is my beloved Son. Listen to Him." The disciples were scared, but Jesus said, "Don't be afraid - but don't tell anyone about this yet."

A kid's life can be pretty routine. Even in the summer, you have play dates, chores and church. There might be a barbecue or fireworks to go to, but mostly it's the same old stuff.

When something totally different and unexpected happens, it's shocking! Whether you win a trip to Disney World or get into a car accident, it can be hard to understand all the thoughts and feelings you have. You might be happy and also scared; you might be frustrated that your plans have changed and confused by the uproar.

This week's Gospel (Mt 17:1-9) describes one of those times. Life with Jesus always had unexpected moments, but His friends were used to the routine of traveling and teaching people about God.

Now, something unexpected happens: Jesus takes a few of them aside and shows them a glimpse of what He would look like in heaven!

When you're faced with something totally out of your routine, it can take a while to figure out how to handle it. What do you do? How do you feel? Peter, James and John weren't sure, either. Peter offered to build places to worship Jesus, Moses and Elijah; then, when God's voice spoke, all the disciples got so scared, they fell down.

Jesus' reaction gives an idea of how to handle it. Jesus touches everyone to show He's with them and they don't need to be scared. Jesus is their friend. He'll help them understand.

When something big happens in your life, you can turn to adults you trust. Even when you're overwhelmed and emotional, not everything has changed, and there are people who can help. God is always there, too. Together, you can get through anything![[In-content Ad]]
