What the judges said

In citing The Evangelist seven times for excellence in journalism (see separate article), the judges commented on some of the winners. Here is what they said:

* On James Breig's TV criticism: "I find him to be a straight-forward writer who has definite opinions about life and religion, and he does a good job keeping the two connected. His topics are interesting, touching on the old and the new....Excellent, displays strong values."

* On Kate Blain's "Good News for Kids" column: "I thought the idea of the column very creative. It is a given that adults pay more attention to a sermon when it is directed to 'the children.' I suspect the same is true when a column is directed to 'the children.' There is a nice connecting of the Gospel stories to a child's life today. The short prayer at the end of the column is a plus."

* On Dave Oxford's photo (see illustration): "Created to accompany [a poem about candles], this photo-illustration dances with a light that is warm and cool at the same moment. On the page, this photo-illustration does an excellent job of dancing with the poetry to create a memorable package."

* On the "Inside Look" series: "The idea of a year-long series on Catholic institutions that readers likely passed hundreds of times was a good one, and the writers did their homework on the history of each college, convent and retreat house. They gave readers a sense of the ministry and communities behind the stone facades."

* On The Evangelist's annual teen issue: "This 36-page tabloid used eye-catching colors on the cover and photographs of things the target audience of teens is interested in: teens, toys and sports. Inside, the range of topics for the articles covered everything from Clinton to troubled teens, from evangelizing to making choices -- all topics of utmost importance to today's teens. The articles were well-written, mainly from the Christian point of view, and were interspersed with interesting photos which broke up the text, making the piece easier to read."
