What gets yucks from priests?

What do Robin Williams, Mel Brooks and Homer Simpson have in common? They make priests in the Albany Diocese laugh. Here's a sample:

* Rev. John Molyn said one of his favorite comedians is Jonathan Winters because "he was right on the borderline between funny and insanity, and he crossed it often. He could take common, everyday things and have you rolling in the aisles about them." Robin Williams also has that insane sense of humor, he pointed out.

Movies that crack up Father Molyn include anything directed by Mel Brooks. "To Be or Not to Be," "Young Frankenstein" and "High Anxiety" are funny, but the best Brooks film has to be "Blazing Saddles," he said. A friend asked him to see that movie, but Father Molyn told him that he had just cooked dinner. When his friend told him to bring his dinner to the movie, Father Molyn agreed and "took pork chops and beans to the theater."

* Rev. Peter Sullivan III shares Father Molyn's love of Brooks' films and added "History of the World" to the list of funny movies he directed. "The Pink Panther" movies also make him laugh, and he's a big fan of Peter Sellers, who played Inspector Clouseau in them.

Bugs Bunny and the Looney Tunes crew also make Father Sullivan, a frequent viewer of the Cartoon Network, chuckle.

* Rev. George Fleming watches "The Simpsons" and enjoys

sketch comedy "because sometimes they do absurd things that reflect life today." He used to watch "SCTV" and still tunes in to "Saturday Night Live."

His favorite sketch from "SNL" was a "Church Chat" segment with the Church Lady, played by Dana Carvey. Jim and Tammie Bakker were played by Phil Hartman and Jan Hooks, and Father Fleming couldn't believe how well they portrayed those characters. "It was so on the mark and over the top, and talked about the absurdity of the whole thing. The satire was so on target," he said. (PQ)
