EDITOR'S NOTE
Welcome to new readers
This week's issue of The Evangelist is being read by 6,000 new readers. We hope they become new subscribers to our award-winning newspaper.
Last February, we sent thousands of free copies of the Albany Diocese's weekly paper to all parishes. In turn, they distributed them to Catholics who are not current subscribers.
That proved to be a successful effort, so we're doing it again this week.
Right now, 50,000 homes in the Diocese receive The Evangelist every week. The goal of the free copies is to reach thousands more with news about the Church...insights into their faith...guidance on spirituality...perspectives on the world at large...and special material for young Catholics (see pages 26-28 especially).
There are many reasons to subscribe. For one thing, said Archbishop John Foley, the Catholic press can help build a sense of community by helping individuals realize they are not alone in practicing their faith. The president of the Vatican's Pontifical Council for Social Communications, Archbishop Foley has commended The Evangelist for its "continued excellence."
Catholic newspapers not only provide "authentic information about the Church and society," he said; they also form "a true sense of Catholic community."
They make "us realize that we are not alone in practicing our faith," and provide "good ideas about how we might be able to strengthen our faith and share it with others," he added.
To the new readers, The Evangelist says, "Welcome. Take a look around. We hope you like what you see and come back for more."
