We're like the robins
Robins are brown birds with red bellies. They go away during the winter, but they always come back in the spring. You can count on the robins: When you see them, you know warm weather is on the way!
In a way, people are like robins. People live their whole lives, then die and go away to heaven. But in this week's Gospel (John 11:1-45), we learn that we'll come back someday, too.
When Jesus heard His friend Lazarus was sick, He went to see him. But when Jesus and the disciples got there, Lazarus had died. "I am the resurrection and the life," Jesus told everyone. "If you believe in me, even if you die, you'll live again." He yelled into the cave where Lazarus was buried, "Lazarus, come out!" And Lazarus walked out of the tomb, alive and well.
When it's been winter for a while, people start hoping for spring. They look for robins because that means sunshine, warm weather and spring are coming.
The people Jesus met were looking for something a little different. They had lost their friend Lazarus and felt really sad, and they were looking for a sign that God cared about them.
Even though you know the robins come back every spring, it's still a surprise when you see one. You get so excited!
In the Gospel story, Jesus had been telling people over and over that someday, everyone who died would come back to life and the whole world would be happy. But it was a surprise to them when He proved it by bringing Lazarus back to life!
Jesus showed everyone that we're like robins. If we have faith in Him, even if we're gone for a long time, we'll be back someday!
PRAYER FOR THE WEEK: Jesus, help me look for all kinds of robins this spring! Amen.
