GOOD NEWS FOR KIDS
We all make lists
Jesus, help me to work on checking off my lists -- but not worry too much about it! Amen.
Jesus went to the temple -- like a church -- in His town and read from the Torah, the Jewish Bible. "The Spirit of the Lord is in me," He read. "He has sent me to make the poor happy, make the blind see, and tell you it's time for God to save His people." Jesus looked at the people and said, "Today, this reading has come true right in front of you."People always have "to-do" lists. Grownups write things down to remember their doctor's appointments and that birthday party you were invited to next week; you probably write down your homework assignments so you don't forget them.
If Jesus was in your class, He might be writing right alongside you! In this week's Gospel (Luke 1:1-4,4:14-21), we hear about Jesus' "to-do" list -- and it's a long one.
Some people make lists just because they don't remember what they have to do otherwise. For other people, checking things off on a list as they finish makes them feel proud.
The things on Jesus' list were even more difficult than, "Read Chapter 14" or "Math homework: Page 6, questions 1-50." Jesus knew He wouldn't be on the Earth forever, but while He was here, He had to heal blind people so they could see, help the poor and prisoners, and teach people all about God!
When you finish everything on a list, you're probably relieved, knowing you won't get in trouble and you can relax. Jesus must have felt confident that He'd finish everything on His list: Before He even started His work, He told everyone, "This has come true today." He was already sure He'd be getting it done!
