Walking toward Jesus
Jesus, help me remember I don't need to be confident to do something; I just need to start doing it! Amen.
The Apostles were in a boat when they saw Jesus walking across the water toward them! Peter yelled, "If that's really you, tell me to come to you." "Come," Jesus said. Peter jumped out and walked on the water to Jesus - but got scared and sank. Jesus caught him and said, "You don't have much faith. Why did you doubt?" He brought Peter to the boat, and all the Apostles worshipped Jesus.
This summer, you've probably had times where you said, "I can't do it." Whether you were standing on a diving board at a pool or groaning over your summer reading list, you couldn't imagine accomplishing what you were supposed to!
This week's Gospel (Matthew 14:22-33) talks about that. Jesus has been asking people to follow Him, starting with the Apostles - but it's hard to get them to do what He asks of them.
Learning to dive or looking at a long list of summer reading can be overwhelming. How are you supposed to do this? You're scared. There's not enough time. You've changed your mind about learning. This is not possible!
The Apostles felt the same way. They saw Jesus teaching people, but how were they supposed to do it? They saw Him doing miracles, too, but when He told Peter to walk across the water to Him, Peter got scared and started sinking. Peter must have been thinking, "This just isn't possible!"
Doing something doesn't always start with believing you can do it. Sometimes, you have to dive into the pool to find out your diving lessons have worked! To get through the summer reading list, you just have to pick up a book and start reading.
You're like Peter. Peter didn't need to know how Jesus could make him walk on water; he just needed to trust Jesus and keep walking. That's a good idea for anyone who thinks they can't accomplish something![[In-content Ad]]
