'FRIENDLY EAR'
Volunteer turns retirement years into time to serve others
"It is important to do what you like to do when you become a volunteer."
Those words were spoken by Betty Lemieur, Volunteer of the Year from Seton Health-St. Mary's Hospital in Troy. She was recognized for her outstanding service to patients.
Ms. Lemieur retired from a career in civil service for the State of New York four years ago. One week later, she signed up to be a volunteer.
Helping patients
"I always thought I might be a nurse, and I've always wanted to help people," said Ms. Lemieur, a parishioner of St. Joseph's parish in Green Island. "I really enjoy helping people."
She assists patients in completing their medical and insurance forms when they go for outpatient testing to the pre-admission department of the hospital. She also takes patients for tests, X-rays, ultra-sounds and CT scans in the medical imaging department.
And she listens. "Sometimes, people are nervous, even afraid," she explained. "Some have no idea where to go or how to get there. Some don't know why they are having tests. That's why it's important for me to be there for them."
Making a difference
When she became a volunteer, Ms. Lemieur wanted to "make a difference" in the lives of others.
"I didn't want my retirement years to be wasted time," she added. "I have always enjoyed being around others. There hasn't been a day in the last four years that I have wanted to stay home. I love going to the hospital. I so enjoy working with everyone there."
"Betty is very accommodating to our unit," said Ann Callahan, staff nurse in the pre-admission department. "She comes in whenever we ask her to. She is always happy to fill in when other volunteers can't make it or go on vacation. Whatever needs to be done, Betty is right there to do it. We can always count on her."
Thumbs up
Ed Campbell, the supervisor of the Ultra Sound/Medical Imaging department, said, "I can't say enough about Betty. Our volunteers are a major part of our hospital staff. They do their jobs with dedication and dignity, but Betty is very special.
"In this department, we enjoy her company and love working with her. Her unique sense of humor always puts our patients at ease. She greets people with a warm, friendly smile. She sets the pace for what volunteerism is all about. She is very special to us."
Ms. Lemieur explains her role this way: "I love to just listen. Sometimes, that is all that they want or need: a friendly ear, someone to care about what they think and feel."
