Video shows reality of vocations

The Catholic Church is celebrating the Year for Consecrated Life, and the Albany Diocese is all-in: The Diocesan Vocations Awareness Council has released a video about religious life that's already gotten about 1,300 hits on YouTube.

"It's fast-moving; it's a happy piece," said Sister Rosemary Cuneo, CR, diocesan vocations director for religious life.

The six-minute video intersperses voices singing, "Put your hands together," with scenes of people in various forms of religious life at work and play, and quotes from the subjects themselves. Sister Rosemary said every religious order in the Diocese was offered the chance to participate, so the video features not just sisters, but religious brothers and others.

"What I found so compelling about religious life was that people could love God and serve the Church and God's people, and still be themselves," remarks one woman religious in the video.

Another cites the "wondrous sense of support and freedom" of living and working with people who have the same beliefs.

The video doesn't shy away from tough questions; on her vow of poverty, one sister says that it's "very freeing. Vowing to rely on God for our material and spiritual needs gives us a more simple life;" another sister says that "chastity has created space within me to live generously, to live freely."

The spectrum of work done by people in religious life is highlighted, including teaching, working with the elderly, helping undocumented people, working in a food pantry and even handling finances or doing food service.

Getting equal attention is play: Sisters, brothers and priests are shown rooting for a team at a basketball game or laughing with friends, and some list in voiceovers the sports and hobbies they enjoy, from kayaking to bowling to a night at the movies.

Sister Rosemary said vocations directors for religious orders are starting to post links to the video online. "I didn't know it was going to touch so many," she said - but added that she has faith in the video's power to spark people's interest in pursuing vocations: "I'm sure it's going to spur somebody."[[In-content Ad]]
