Using our five senses

PRAYER FOR THE WEEK
Jesus, teach me to think about which senses I'm using as I go through my day!  Amen.

"At the end of the world, the sun and moon will grow dark, and the stars will fall from the sky," said Jesus. "Then I'll come back and gather all the good people in the world. When a tree grows leaves, you know summer is coming. When you see the signs I talked about, know that God is coming."

Not everyone in the world has the use of all five senses: sight, hearing, taste, touch and smell. If a person can't see, you wonder, how do they know where to find a chair to sit down? If a person can't hear, how do they know if someone's calling on the phone?

People who have disabilities rely on their other senses, along with help from other people (and animals, like guide dogs for the blind). If someone doesn't hear well, for example, he watches people's mouths when they talk.

This week's Gospel (Mark 13:24-32) is about what to rely on when the world is coming to an end someday: the things our senses show us, and the things that Jesus told us about.

A person who is deaf might use a special attachment to her phone that blinks a light when someone is calling, and shows their words on a screen. A person who can't see might ask for help in finding a chair in a crowded room.

A person who's wondering when the world will end can look at Jesus' advice. It's not likely the end of the world will come for a long, long time, but Jesus said to look for some signs that will tell us when: the sun and moon going dark and the stars falling.

People with disabilities use different senses, devices to help them and assistance from others. We can use our senses to figure out that God is coming soon - and, in the meantime, we can use them to help each other![[In-content Ad]]
