GOOD NEWS FOR KIDS
Use 'Christmastime energy'
Jesus, help me get ready for your birthday by doing good things! Amen.
John the Baptist was teaching people that Jesus was coming soon, and they were excited. "What can we do to get ready?" they asked. John told them: "Whoever has two coats, give one to the person who has none. If you have food, give away the extra. Don't take more money than you need, and be happy with what you have."
Christmastime brings a boost of energy for some people - especially kids. Since you're surrounded by decorations, bell-ringers, lines to see Santa and commercials for toys, it's easy to get enthusiastic! That's one reason kids get into the "giving spirit" and find ways to help others.
This week's Gospel (Luke 3:10-18) says that's a great idea. When Jesus was about to "go public" and start teaching people about God, a lot of people got excited. They didn't just want to wait around for Him like a kid waiting for Christmas; they wanted to do something in the meantime!
If you're looking for ways to use up your extra energy before Christmas, you have a lot of choices: You can collect food for people who don't have enough or donations for people who lost everything during Hurricane Sandy; you can take a part in your church's Christmas pageant, help a younger kid write a letter to Santa or help your family clean up the house for Christmas.
That's exactly what John the Baptist suggested: Being good, generous and thoughtful are the best ways to get ready for Jesus, so give away your extra clothes, food and money, and be happy with a little less this year. Christmas is coming; use your energy and enthusiasm to do good things![[In-content Ad]]
