Two schools up, two schools down

Holy Names, LaSalle on winning streak; Maginn, ND-BG fall

With two games left on their regular football season schedule, LaSalle Institute knew heading into their game on Oct. 2 that they would be making the playoffs. The only task at hand was keeping their undefeated season intact, which was exactly what they did.

Cory Riffenberick ran for two touchdowns and the defense continued its dominating performance as the Troy school defeated Columbia 28-0. It was the second shutout in three games for LaSalle (5-0, 3-0) and, after giving up 16 points in their first game, the defense has allowed a total of 14 points over the past four games.

MORE FOOTBALL
After opening the season with four straight home games, Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons School in Schenectady began the tail end of their schedule which features three straight games on the road. With playoff implications in mind, ND-BG took on Class D leader Lake George.

However, Lake George running back Caleb Meroski was too much for ND-BG, scoring for three touchdowns on 245 yards rushing. ND-BG (3-2, 2-2) fell 26-6. Derrick Pitts rushed for 114 yards and scored on a 59-yard run in the second quarter for ND-BG.

The team from Bishop Maginn High in Albany also had playoffs on their minds when they took on Niskayuna on October 2nd. However, they were unable to get anything going offensively until the fourth quarter, when it was too late. The 27-12 loss dropped the Griffins to 1-2 in the league and 2-3 overall.

GIRLS' SOCCER
The Academy of the Holy Names in Albany continued to roll along, winning their seventh and eighth consecutive games on Oct. 1 and 3. Sophomore center back (and intern for The Evangelist) Quinn Massaroni had a goal and two assists and four other Holy Names players each scored a goal as AHN defeated Cohoes 5-1 on Oct. 1.

On Oct. 3, AHN scored two goals in the second half to break a 1-1 tie with Albany, winning 3-1. Kierra Moore had a goal and an assist for Holy Names, whose season improved to 8-1 with the victory.
