CATHOLIC PRESS ASSOCIATION
The Evangelist wins six national journalism awards
The awards were handed out at the annual convention of the Catholic Press Association, which represents Catholic newspapers and magazines. The convention was held last week in St. Louis.
There are more than 200 Catholic newspapers and magazines in the country. The Evangelist, the second-largest newspaper in the Capital Region and the area's largest weekly newspaper, is mailed every week to about 35,000 homes in the Albany Diocese. (To add subscriptions, call 518-453-6688 or email [email protected].)
The CPA awards, which were judged by journalists from both the religious and secular press, were given for material that appeared during 2015.
AWARDS
The Evangelist won six CPA prizes:
• second place for individual excellence as an editor for Kate Blain for the second year in a row (individual excellence award categories combine entries from Catholic newspapers, magazines, newsletters and Spanish-language publications throughout North America);
• second place in the category of "best coverage of vocations" for Ms. Blain's story "Bishop reflects on first year," about Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger's first year leading the Albany Diocese;
• in the same vocations category, an honorable mention for "Newest priest galloped into vocation," by Ms. Blain, a profile of Rev. Rick Lesser, a widowed veterinarian who entered the priesthood later in life;
• second place in the category of "best feature photo story" for photographer Nate Whitchurch's coverage of "The Cast of Christmas" -- the children who performed in a Nativity play at St. Michael the Archangel parish in Troy;
• third place in the category of "best package of news photos" for Mr. Whitchurch's pictures of Father Lesser's ordination ceremony, titled "Hugs for a new Father." The entry also included a column on gratitude by Father Lesser as he ended his time contributing to The Evangelist's monthly "Seminarian's Diary" column; and
• an honorable mention for "best Scripture column" for "Good News for Kids" by Kate Blain, which explains the weekly Gospel in kid-friendly terms. This was the eighth time the column has been honored in the Catholic Press Awards.
JUDGES' REMARKS
The judges called Kate Blain "truly an editor who does it all for her readers, from the big stories to the smaller everyday happenings in individual parishes, to a column meant to encourage kids in their faith," lauding The Evangelist's "diverse layout/organization style and content matter."
The award-winning story on the Bishop's first year began, "It was a dark and stormy night -- and Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger was out on the road in it." The judges remarked: "How could readers not be drawn into this story after that first paragraph? They can't. And the following details don't disappoint. This extremely well-written piece then continues to delight and inform, giving us an excellent view into the life of a bishop, even his Major League Baseball preference."
Photographer Nate Whit-church was complimented repeatedly for his two awards. The judges called his photos of Father Lesser's ordination "good images" and were particularly impressed with how he captured a children's Nativity play, noting "the fun the photographer seemed to have with the subject. Children performing the Christmas pageant [are] rarely on script, and the photographer approached the story that way. Very nice lead image and the little aside at the end make this a fun story."
