The Evangelist captures seven journalism prizes
Only two other papers -- Seattle and Chicago -- achieved the same number of awards in those categories.
The results of the competition, which judged material that appeared during 1998, were announced during the annual Catholic Press Association convention, held last week in Chicago. The CPA represents 167 diocesan newspapers throughout the U.S.
The judges for the contest included journalism and communications professors from such universities as Seton Hall and Brown, as well as publishers, editors and writers from secular newspapers and magazines throughout the U.S.
The Evangelist was cited in these categories:
* Second prize for best column on the arts, awarded to James Breig, editor, for Tuned In, his weekly commentary on television.
* Second prize for best column on spiritual life, awarded to Kate Blain, assistant editor, for "Good News for Kids," her weekly commentary aimed at children that comments on the Sunday Gospel.
* Second prize for best photo illustration, awarded to Dave Oxford for "I Am A Candle."
* Honorable mention for best analysis/background/roundup reporting, for coverage of the scandal involving President Clinton, awarded to James Breig, editor; Kate Blain, assistant editor; and staff writers Maureen McGuinness and Paul Quirini, for a year-long series of articles and editorials.
* Honorable mention for best investigative reporting for The Evangelist's 12-part series titled "Inside Look," which examined major institutions in the Albany Diocese, awarded to Kate Blain, assistant editor; and staff writers Maureen McGuinness and Paul Quirini.
* Honorable mention for best reporting on a special age group, awarded to the staff for its annual teen issue. This is the eighth time in the past ten years that The Evangelist has been cited for its special issue on Catholic youth.
* Honorable mention for best special supplement, awarded to the staff of The Evangelist for its annual Christmas issue.
