Table provides surface for family interaction

Most people think of their kitchen table as just as place to eat. To me, it is so much more. So many of my memories of my family includes the kitchen table. It was where I would sit as a child and read to my mom as she prepared dinner or washed the dishes. Its surface was smooth and large enough to fit the biggest poster boards for all my artwork and school projects.

It was the place my whole family could sit around and work on large puzzles or play Monopoly. It was the best battlefield for my Ninja turtles and Batman figures.

The kitchen table was so much fun, especially around the holidays. At Halloween, my mom would cover the table with newspapers so when my dad carved the jack-o-lanterns, he could dump all of the seeds on the table. At Thanksgiving, my Grandma would cover the table with wax paper and carefully place strands of homemade macaroni on it to dry. At Christmas time, my sister and I would use the table to roll out cookie dough and sprinkle colored sugars of them. At Easter time, we would line up cups filled with colored water to decorate our eggs.

The kitchen table is filled with so many happy memories like planning our family vacations, blowing out birthday candles, and sharing mealtime and holiday prayers. It is also filled with sad memories, like when my mom told us Grandma was dying.

As time goes by, I continue to read and do my homework on the kitchen table. Now that I am older, it has become a place for me to sit and reflect.

Whether I am having a good day or a bad one, just sitting at the kitchen table reminds me of all that God has blessed me with and how much He loves me.

The kitchen table is more than just a place to eat; it is the center of my family life -- a place I hold sacred -- a place that sparks my faith.
