Good News for Kids
Sweet dessert for finish
What's your favorite dessert? Whether you like apples or ice cream, lots of kids think the best part of a meal is dessert, the sweet stuff at the end.
Jesus might agree with you. In this week's Gospel (John 2:1-11), He makes sure a wedding has a sweet (and happy) ending by doing His very first miracle.
Jesus and Mary went to a wedding, and the guests there drank up all the wine. Mary knew Jesus could help, so she told Him, "They have no more wine." Jesus looked at the jugs of water people used to wash their hands. "Have the waiter taste it," He said. The waiter tried it and said to the groom, "Most people serve the best wine first, but you saved it until now." The water had turned into wine!
The best place to have dessert is at a party. Lunch at a party might end with birthday cake or frozen yogurt. When you go out to eat, you might hope for a good dessert.
At the party after the wedding Jesus and Mary went to, people drank wine with dinner -- and more wine as dessert. But soon, all the wine was gone, and the people were as cranky as a kid without dessert. Jesus was the only one who could help.
Even if you know dessert is coming after a meal, it still feels like a surprise when you see it. But the people Jesus met at the wedding didn't know He could do miracles, because He had never done one before. Even Jesus didn't really want to make wine when Mary first asked.
If you don't eat dessert, it's not a big deal, but you might feel a little sad that there isn't anything sweet to eat. You'd be happy with just one cookie!
At the wedding, Jesus decided to help out and make the water into wine. But He didn't just make one little drink for the people -- He made jars and jars of the best wine ever! Jesus wanted to show people that when they asked Him for help, He wouldn't just give a little bit. With Jesus, the ending is always as sweet as dessert!
PRAYER FOR THE WEEK: Jesus, help me trust you to give me what I need most -- even if it's not dessert. Amen!
